Excerpts from articles on SARS:

AUSTRALIANS leaving the country yesterday were told they may not get back in if they are showing symptoms of the pneumonia-like SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).........

The warning came as Qantas announced it was cancelling all flights to Hong Kong due to the spread of the disease.

From the Herald Sun in Australia

SINGAPORE, March 28 (Reuters) - Singapore on Friday nearly doubled the number of people quarantined to contain the spread of a deadly virus that has killed more than 54 people worldwide.

Health officials told reporters the city-state has ordered 1,514 citizens to stay home as the number of infections climbed, up from a quarantine of 861 on Wednesday.

A dozen British Columbians are living in voluntary isolation at home as the pneumonia crisis sweeping the world worsens....

Four of the 12 have symptoms considered signs of the disease, says B.C. chief medical health officer Dr. Perry Kendall, who lists the symptoms as dry cough, fever and shortness of breath.

Another eight have mild symptoms and have travelled to the affected areas of Toronto, Hong Kong, Singapore, Hanoi and China's Guangdong province.

Toronto has hundreds under quarantine too.

Toronto Sun: "Toronto EMS said more than 140 of its paramedics are quarantined -- plus three have been hospitalized with the illness -- and it is getting by with medics on overtime and by reducing its services." http://www.canoe.ca/TorontoNews/ts.ts-03-28-0006.html

"Toronto has become a hot zone for SARS as Ontario's top doctors step up their mad rush to choke off the spread of the illness before it smothers the city. Under an emergency plan that changes by the day, visitors have been banned from all Toronto hospitals, the province has bought every surgical mask for sale in Canada and the World Health Organization called for all passengers boarding international flights at Pearson airport to be screened for SARS." http://www.canoe.ca/TorontoNews/ts.ts-03-28-0003.html

I just heard on another discussion list from somebody in Toronto that Toronto is considering mandatory quarantine. Basically, you wouldn't be allowed out of your house without a mask.

What are we doing in the U.S.? I'm more worried about this than I am about a terrorist attack.

"Doctors in Hong Kong say they have also had success treating the worst sufferers with a serum of antibodies from recovered patients."

Ok i am really confused. The mortality rate of this disease is somewhere around 3-5% according to news reports. But using a serum of antibodies from recovered pations is a risky procedure because of the numerous other blood born disease many of which we haven't recognized and therefore can't test for. In addition it has been used in the past and has always proven ineffective. Why are they using it now?
